Can I help one of my children without this reducing his/her share in the inheritance?
Yes, you may decide to help one of your children during your lifetime by giving him a donation of a sum of money, or a donation of property and specifying in the deed of donation that this donation has to be exempted from the obligation of collation and imputation (that is, from the obligation of bringing back the value of the gift into the estate). As stated above, however, one needs to be sure that the donation being given does not exceed the disposable portion of the estate of the deceased. Your notary will help you to ascertain this.
You may also decide to leave any one of your children who might happen to need additional support a larger portion of the estate or an additional property in your will. In this case too, the will must specify that the child is exempted from the obligation of collation and imputation.
