How can I protect my spouse or partner ?

The spouse and registered partner are well protected in the Dutch Civil Code and will, by law, inherit all assets. Children, though heirs, only inherit debts (plus interest), which are payable at the time of death of the surviving spouse/ registered partner. Although children have a right to a forced share of the estate of their parents, the amount is not payable during the life of the surviving spouse/registered partner. The child has only a right to the value of his forced share and will not become heir by invoking his right. Donations between spouses/partners during their life are for that reason not popular in the Netherlands.
