How can I protect my spouse or partner?

One can protect one's spouse in two ways:

a testator can make provisions during his/her lifetime in favour of his/her spouse to the extent of his/her disposable share,
a testator can grant his/her spouse a right in rem to use a given asset which he/she deems important and necessary to his/her spouse's survival. Thus, it will not affect the heirs' reserved shares as, after the spouse's or partner's death, the right to use will automatically revert to the heirs who have inherited the relevant share.
